It’s been over a year since the initial cases of Covid-19 began, and almost a whole year since masks have been mandated in the United States. While we’re sure you’re familiar with wearing a mask, it’s important to know how to care for it as well. Most doctors and health experts agree that it’s not just the mask itself that makes a difference, but how you use it.
Here are a few tips for proper mask care that will help you be as hygienic as possible.
Wash Your Face Mask Regularly
You’re going to want to wash your mask after every use. Yes, that’s correct – every time you return home after being out and about, you should consider your mask to be dirty. If you’re using disposable masks, then washing isn’t required. However, if your mask is cloth, fabric, or a reusable filtered style face mask, it needs to be washed when returning home.
If your mask has a filter, dispose the filter in a safe receptacle. If your mask is cloth but you won’t be washing it immediately, place your used mask into a sealed bag or container until its ready to be cleaned and have another mask ready in case you need one. Ideally (depending on your usage and when you actually wash them) you’ll need to have several masks to ensure there’s always a couple clean ones ready to use.
How to Wash Your Face Mask
Your mask can be cleaned with your regular laundry, however, don’t forget that these can be potentially contaminated. It’s a good idea to wash your hands after handling any used face mask, to mitigate risk of transmission.
You can use normal laundry detergent and cycle them through a typical wash setting. Preferably you’ll want to use warm to hot water. Once washed, tumble dry your mask on high-heat setting.
Another option is to wash your mask in hot water by hand. For this method you can use your normal detergent, soak and clean the mask thoroughly, and then dry with high heat.
As we mentioned already that used masks should be sealed in an air tight bag or container until washed, the same goes for your clean mask. Since you’re wearing it on your face you’ll want to minimize dust, cross-contact, and any contaminants from contacting the surface. Keeping a simple plastic container with your clean masks near the door or in your room is an excellent spot.
As a backup, and in case you forget a mask, it’s always a good idea to keep an extra mask (or two) in the car, your purse, your gym bag, etc.. using clean hands to seal a recently cleaned mask into a ziplock bag is an excellent method for storage. Keep it in your center console, glove box, or wherever you’ll have easy access when going out.
Using a Mask Spray to Freshen Things Up
Our face mask sprays are not a substitute for cleaning by any means. They are, however, an excellent way to make wearing a mask more bearable – especially when wearing for prolonged periods.
What is a mask spray? It’s a simple, safe, and inexpensive way to not only keep your mask smelling fresh from the inside, but to add a little luxury to the whole process. You simply add a spray or two to the inside of your mask before putting it on, and enjoy the effect of the scented and calming essential oils the mask spray contains.
