Get a Grip

Stress, unfortunately, has recently become a part of daily vocabulary in America. Three out of four adults report having at least one physical symptom of stress in the last month, and one in three children even report feeling stressed out. It’s a terrible epidemic, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better… so what are we to do?

Luckily, there are many holistic options to help deal with stress and anxiety. Exercise, meditation, and life organization are effective ways to start managing feelings of worry and tension. But, did you know that aromatherapy is one of the easiest and most passive ways to help alleviate stress? Simply smelling some essential oils can boost your mood, reduce anxiety, and get you on track to feeling better again.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is the most studied oil in relation to reducing stress. It is known to help lower blood pressure, calm the mind, and slow down your heart rate. The two main constituents of Lavender essential oil, linalool and linalyl acetate, have sedative effects which encourage your body to relax. It is also considered one of the safest oils, so it is a great option for children and elderly as well.

*There have been many studies of Lavender being used in stressful medical environments with results of lowered HAMA (Hamilton rating scale for anxiety) scores. In addition, EEG levels show increased brain wave function after inhalation of Lavender oil for only 3 minutes!

Bergamot

This mild citrus oil is a relative newcomer to the aromatherapy crowd. Traditionally used in European flavorings, it is now known to be an impressive essential oil for its ability to help reduce anxiety. Limonene, a major component of Bergamot oil, is known to have anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects. Clinical research supports that some of the therapies of this amazing oil includes reduced blood pressure, heart rate, and stress responses. It has also shown to be effective for increasing feelings of well-being and improved mental health. This is definitely a wonderful addition to any stress blend.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang may have a funny name, but it’s no joke how incredible its aromatherapy capabilities are. This sweet Asian flower oil is well-known for calming the nervous system. Its ability to reduce blood pressure is key to handling stress response. The scent of this oil alone is enough to make you smile, but studies have shown Ylang Ylang can actually decrease heart rate and have helpful sedative effects. The lingering smell of this romantic flower can also be a fragrant inclusion to a nighttime massage oil.

Frankincense

This centuries old essential oil has been written about in the bible and even found in King Tut’s tomb. Could it be that people have known for thousands of years all of the wonderful qualities of Frankincense?  What we do know now is that this precious oil is a sedative oil as well. It is great for regulating breathing and is wonderful for meditation (which is why it’s been used in church). It is also calming and is a natural anti-depressant. Using Frankincense oil can aid in releasing negative emotions and help lift you up mentally and spiritually. No wonder this amazing oil is so famous!

Patchouli

It is quite possible that the scent of Patchouli oil makes you immediately think of hippies, the 1960s, and flower power. Well, there is a good reason for that. Patchouli is the perfect oil to help bring feelings of peace and harmony. This deep, earthy oil can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and even relieve depression. Patchouli oil is rich in sesquiterpenes which means that it has calming properties and can even cross the blood brain barrier. Oils that are high in sesquiterpenes can actually deliver oxygen to cells which practically resuscitates a tired cell and can soothe the nervous system. Wow, chemistry is pretty amazing!

Blue Tansy

Yes, this sweet, fresh oil is actually blue! Blue Tansy’s beautiful scent is calming and clearing. When having feelings of stress and anxiety, this oil can swoop in, relax your mind, and actually help bring self confidence again. Blue Tansy is a sedative oil that may provide relief from anger and irritability as well as promote an overall sense of well-being. This precious oil can be pricey, but it is worth every penny.
